WHAT A national ski and snowboard safety awareness campaign. The effort is called the National [Ski] Safety Initiative 2000 and "Heads Up. Your Responsible" is the name of the skier/snowboarder education and awareness campaign.
WHERE The ski and snowboard safety awareness campaign will be showcased at participating ski areas across the country. Although ski areas each have their own skier/snowboarder education programs, they're encouraged to embrace and support the "Heads Up" campaign by incorporating it in their existing, on-going skier/snowboarder education programs.
WHEN The 1999-2000 season is the pilot season for the campaign. The campaign will continue for many seasons to come.
WHY The objective of the campaign is to attempt to further reduce the frequency of accidents and to unify the industry to focus on and communicate a pro-active, strong safety message.

The ski industry recognizes that there are inherent risks to skiing and snowboarding. The concern is that the sport(s) are being portrayed as more dangerous than they really are. It's important to keep the risks of skiing and snowboarding in perspective and communicate how personal responsibility is key.

HOW The industrywide safety initiative has been introduced to ski areas nationwide via a "source book" which contains the elements of the skier/snowboarder awareness campaign. The established "Your Responsibility Code," which is known to skiers and snowboarders as the seven rules of the slopes will continue to be the industry cornerstone for skier/snowboarder education.

In addition, a national kids' safety poster contest will be held this season. Also, a "National [Ski] Safety Awareness Week is scheduled Sat. Jan. 15 - Fri., Jan 21 (Martin Luther King Jr. Day is Mon. Jan 17) whereby participating ski areas will showcase their skier/snowboarder safety education efforts.

NOTE The National Safety Council (NSC) supports the campaign. The NSC supports other national industries' safety-related efforts such as motor vehicle and boating safety.
